Location: Bronxville, New York Price: $6.9 million Situated in Westchester County, about 20 miles northwest of Manhattan, is the wealthy suburb of Bronxville. In a neighborhood dotted with traditional homes, this elegant French manor stands out. The home belongs to Cheryl Tague, an architect and interior designer with a passion for everything French. “I lived and worked in London for eight years,” Tague said. “During this time, I traveled to France. I was really amazed by the architecture in the French countryside.” Tague purchased the Bronxville property in 2011. At the time, there was a 1950s house on the site, which she subsequently tore down. “The existing home was very plain,” Tague said, adding that its wiring and plumbing were inefficient. In its place, she built the striking manor—known as La Capucine—comprised of centuries-old materials imported from France. The home, which is surrounded by manicured gardens, features reclaimed limestone floors, antique fireplaces and salvaged timber ceilings, among other intricate details. The Stats Built in 2013, the house took one year to complete. With 6,160 square feet of living space, the home has five bedrooms, four full bathrooms and two powder rooms. Design Pedigree In search of inspiration, Tague traveled to the Dordogne-Périgord area in southwestern France. While on her way to look at an antique door for sale, Tague passed an 18th century convent that was being demolished. Its stones were scattered across the lot. “My friend said, ‘There’s no way you’re going to take those back to the U.S.,’” Tague said. But that’s exactly what she did. The convent’s stones now comprise the home’s exterior. Neighborhood Notes Perched on Sunset Hill, in the historic district of Lawrence Park, the home overlooks a neighborhood of 100-year-old houses. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the 1980s. “There hasn’t been a home of this scale built in this neighborhood in the past 100 years,” said listing agent Rita Steinkamp of Houlihan Lawrence.
