One of Britain’s most controversial billionaires has netted a $15 million profit after selling his waterfront Miami mansion. Mike Ashley, founder of U.K.-based clothing chain Sports Direct, sold the 11,795-square-foot home for $45 million, according to The Real Deal. Sitting on exclusive La Gorce Island in Miami Beach, the property boasts a theater, rooftop lounge and guard house. Just three years ago, Ashley paid $30 million for the 1.6-acre, eight-bedroom house known as Castello del Sol. At the time, it was the most expensive property known to have changed hands on La Gorce Island, which is also home to the rapper Lil Wayne. Sports Direct sells sneakers and sports apparel in 440 stores in the U.K. and 220 in continental Europe. Recently, it has been struggling as the strong U.S. dollar has led to higher costs. He told The Times, “We are in trouble, we are not trading very well. We can’t make the same profit we made last year.” At the same time, Ashley has come under fire for his use of so-called “zero hour contracts,” which oblige part-time workers to changing shifts without guaranteeing them minimum hours. British politicians also want to grill him on working conditions at one of Sports Direct’s warehouses. On top of this, Ashley, who also owns Newcastle United Football Club and is said to be worth $3.4 billion, is being sued by his former advisor for about $20 million for allegedly reneging on a performance payment of about $21 million.
