Listing of the Day: An Architect’s Modern Tree House

Suspended by two steel columns, the four-story home doesn’t touch the ground

Location: Washington, D.C. Price: $3.399 million When architect Travis Price stumbled upon a 90-foot-tall tree in Rock Creek Park, he decided to build his next home beside it. “The tree was sort of growing out of a mega rock on the cliff,” Price said, referring to the oak tree’s massive roots that wrapped around a rock. The image served as inspiration for his next residence: a tall, lanky structure that doesn’t touch the ground, held up by two steel columns and supported by rods.  The exterior is made of copper; glass walls offer views of the surrounding treetops. “You really feel like you’re floating,” said Price, who is known for his unconventional residential designs. The Stats

The 3,500-square-foot house, built in 2001, has four bedrooms and three full bathrooms. It spans four floors. Design Pedigree While based in Washington, D.C., Price has designed buildings in California, New Mexico and Vancouver, as well as in Finland, Nepal, Peru and Ireland. The modern architect was also responsible for D.C.’s first apartment buildings constructed entirely from shipping containers. A Green House Price describes the low-energy home as a “passive house.” The neighboring trees shade the residence and help keep it cool during the warmer months. Sliding doors open to the elements, allowing breezes to waft throughout the four floors. Insulated curtains keep the home warm in the winter, and natural light reduces the need for artificial lighting.Neighborhood Notes Developed in the 1930s, the Forest Hills neighborhood is comprised of single-family homes, many of which are of the Tudor style. The average sales price is around $2.5 million, according to listing agent John Mahshie of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty. “You just get that wonderful sense of being in nature when you’re in the city,” Mahshie said, referring to the neighborhood’s location in Rock Creek Park. Price is selling the home because he’s ready to embark on a new project. “I’m a bit of an explorer, and there are some new things I want to do,” he said.
