Listing of the Day: A Parking Garage-Turned-Artist’s Loft in Cannes

An artist’s touch transformed this utilitarian space into a unique, welcoming home

Location: Cannes, France Price:  €2.99 million (about $3.4 million) This eclectic loft on the French Riviera was a parking garage in a former life. Artist Jean-Loup Daraux wanted a place where he could live, work and display his creative endeavors. A parking garage, he decided, with its expansive open floor plan, was the ideal location for a custom home. The two-story structure, built in the 1940s, could fit roughly 15 cars on each floor. Daraux began the renovations — which included the addition of a third floor — a year after he bought the property; he finished it two years later. “I transformed it completely,” he said in French. The Basics The three-story home measures 7,535 square feet. It has four bedrooms and three full bathrooms. There’s also a separate studio apartment. Design Pedigree Daraux, who is also an interior architect, designed the residence. He and his brother own an interior design store, Mis en Demeure, which sells furniture, lighting, and other high-end home décor. The brothers opened their first location in Paris and, later, a second store in Cannes. Furnishings similar in style, along with paintings and sculptures by Daraux, are displayed throughout the home. (They are not included in the sale.) A Handsome Restoration The home’s slanted entrance is about 16-feet-wide and was originally the driveway. Daraux preserved the concrete floors, adding a mosaic made from 72,000 pieces of marble. Amenities Daraux keeps most of his work — and creates new pieces — in an airy artist’s studio on the ground floor. There’s also a living room on the third floor, which opens to a terrace where lemon trees grow. Neighborhood Notes The former garage is about a five-minute walk from the Boulevard de la Croisette, where the celebrity set descends for the Festival de Cannes in May. The surrounding neighborhood is mostly residential. “It’s a one-way street, so it’s quiet,” Daraux said. While there are two small hotels in the area, most of the people are locals.
