Listing of the Day: An Ultra-Luxe Apartment in the Sky

The penthouse offers dramatic views of downtown Chicago

Save

Location:  Chicago, Illinois

Price:  $6.25 million From its perch on the top floor of the Legacy — a 72-story condominium in the Loop, Chicago’s business district — this penthouse towers above the bustle of the city below. “It has 180-degree views looking north, south and east over downtown Chicago,” said the seller, George, who asked to be identified by his first name only. Enticed by the convenience of downtown living, he purchased the penthouse with his wife in 2012 — and began renovating immediately. “We wanted to create a very upscale living environment,” George explained, noting that the previous design didn’t do “what was best for the views.” Their efforts were a success. Large windows in nearly every room offer views of Millennium Park, Lake Michigan and the Chicago Yacht Club; the master bedroom has three exposures. Exotic stones, floor inlays and Murano glass in the entryway add a dose of glamour. “It’s really the drama that will appeal to someone,” said listing agent Nancy Tassone of Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty. The Basics The 5,000-square-foot penthouse, finished in 2014, has three bedrooms, three full bathrooms and one partial bath. Design Pedigree The couple enlisted architect Jeff Harting of GTH Architects to lead the redesign of the residence, with interiors by Renée Gaddis.Amenities For those who like to start their morning with a jolt of espresso, the kitchen is equipped with a hidden TopBrewer coffee system. “The only thing you can see on the counter is a spout,” George said. Sip your coffee in the breakfast banquet, or take it outside to the private terrace. Building amenities include a fitness center, an indoor lap pool and a hot tub. There’s also a sundeck on the 15th floor, as well as two hospitality rooms with outdoor lounges on the 42nd and 60th floors.High-Tech Home A Sonos sound system — complete with speakers hidden in the ceilings — is available throughout the residence. The security system includes camera monitors; the door locks can be activated by smartphone. Additional Perks A sky-bridge links the Legacy to the University Club, a private social club founded more than a century ago. For a fee, non-member homeowners can play a game of squash, book guest rooms for visitors, or schedule catering services for events held in the Legacy’s hospitality rooms. Homeowners who opt to become members of the University Club will have access to other amenities, including restaurants, wine storage and personal training. Neighborhood Notes The Loop has seen an increase in residential construction in the past decade. The neighborhood offers plenty of public transportation options, including buses and trains. Catch a film screening, outdoor concert or art installation at Millennium Park, home of the iconic stainless steel structure known as “The Bean.” The nearby Chicago Yacht Club hosts dozens of races and regattas throughout the summer boating season.
