Appropriately named The Stage, Galliard Homes’ 2.3-acre development in Shoreditch sits on the site of the Curtain Theatre, once home to William Shakespeare’s Theater Company. The developers of this $1.1 billion mixed-use project have released photos of their work-in-progress. The four buildings including a 37-story residential tower and two office buildings designed around a 1.28-acre public square. The development will showcase the sunken remains of the Elizabethan Curtain Theatre, which opened in 1577 — predating the more famous Globe Theatre by 22 years — and closed in 1622; the site wasn’t discovered until 2011. It is believed that Romeo and Juliet and Henry V were first performed here. The residential tower will feature 412 luxurious studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and four-bedroom duplex penthouses. Some will have balconies that overlook the site of the theater. They will be priced between $1 million and $5.8 million. Residents will have access to a health and fitness club as well as a rooftop bar on the 32nd floor. There will also be a 200-seat sunken amphitheatre where plays can be staged.
