Listing of the Day: Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion

Price: $200 million The Playboy Mansion made headlines this week when reports surfaced that the party palace is now up for grabs. The catch? The seller, Playboy Enterprises, requires that 89-year-old magazine mogul Hugh Hefner be allowed to live there for the rest of his life. The more than 20,000-square-foot mansion is located in Los Angeles’ Holmby Hills. The estate includes a four-bedroom guesthouse, a game house filled with pool tables and pinball machines, and a zoo featuring exotic birds and monkeys. And yes, the animals will be included in the sale. You've heard tales of the lagoon-like swimming pool and the infamous grotto, but what about the property's private redwood forest or the pipe organ in the living room? We asked listing agents Gary Gold of Hilton & Hyland and Mauricio Umansky of The Agency to reveal some lesser-known facts about the residence.

The Playboy Mansion was Los Angeles’ original million dollar listing

Playboy Enterprises bought the estate for $1.05 million in 1971, setting a price record at the time. “That was the highest sale ever in Los Angeles,” said Gold. “It was the first house to sell for over a million dollars.” The Playboy Mansion is reportedly the most expensive property for sale in the U.S. It tops Palazzo di Amore, the Mediterranean-style villa in Beverly Hills, currently on the market for $149 million after taking a $46 million price cut last year.

The estate includes a private redwood forest

The Playboy Mansion sits on nearly five acres and borders the Los Angeles Country Club. “There’s an entire redwood forest inside the gates,” said Umansky. Hefner’s youngest son, Cooper, now in his twenties, recounted playing hide-and-seek in the forest as a child in a recent video from Business Insider.

There is a built-in pipe organ in the living room

The living room, where films are screened, features a restored pipe organ. “A story was told to me where they screened a silent film and someone played the organ alongside it,” said Umansky. Who might be the next owner of the Playboy Mansion?
