Location: Washington, D.C.

Price: $4.395 million Leafy trees tower above this home in Spring Valley, a well-heeled neighborhood in northwest Washington, D.C. The house, built in 1954, was a relic from the post-World War II era until the owner asked architect Robert Gurney to give it a contemporary look. “The idea was to do something that was modern but compatible with the neighborhood,” said Gurney. The owner, who asked not to be identified, said it was important to him for the neighborhood to maintain its architectural style. Inside, the home is sleek and minimal, with glass walls, beech floors, and aluminum details. The roughly 6,800-square-foot house has six bedrooms, five full bathrooms, and one partial bathroom. A glass tunnel with heated floors links the main house to a 1,200-square-foot pool house that was added in 2014. “You can walk in your bathing suit from the house to the pool with six inches of snow and ice outside,” said listing agent Ron Mangas Jr. of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty. Upstairs, a home office is detached from the rest of the house. “It’s one of the highest points in the neighborhood,” said Mangas. In addition to views of Spring Valley, the office, which is accessible by a roof deck, features a ventless fireplace and a pop-up television that disappears into the cabinets. The owner is selling the home because he’s spending more time in New York. Agent: Ron Mangas Jr., TTR Sotheby’s International Realty View the full listing.
