Location:  Sydney

Price:  A$6 million+ (About US$4.3 million)

This modern estate is set in Darlinghurst, a suburb of Sydney known for its wine bars, trendy restaurants and stylish boutiques.

The property, designed by the noted architect Dale Jones-Evans, consists of two houses with entrances on different streets. A courtyard connects the homes at the back.

The entrance to the five-story main house is on the second floor. A bridge flanked by windows allows natural light to cascade into the dining room located a floor below.

The dining room is set against a Sydney sandstone wall. “There’s something incredibly raw about this space,” said listing agent Louisa Jackson of Langulin Realty. The builders took more than 1,100 hours to excavate 350 metric tons (about 385 U.S. tons) of soil and rock, according to Jackson. “You’re actually dining in a cave. It feels like what you might find in Europe,” she said.

The walls throughout the home are coated in Stucco Veneziano, a masonry covering made from crushed marble and beeswax. As day turns into night and the light begins to change, the walls appear to glisten, according to Jackson. “You get these fantastic colors throughout the house,” she said.

The main house consists of five bedrooms, three full bathrooms and one partial bathroom. A sixth bedroom and a fourth bathroom are located in the smaller home. Amenities include a steam room, a four-car garage and a wine cellar with room for 2,000 bottles.

The home was finished in 2013 and awaits its first residents.
