Location:  Carmel, Calif.

Price:  $18.5 million Perched at the top of Gentry Hill in the heart of California’s Monterey Peninsula is a home called Tres Paraguas. The name is Spanish for “three umbrellas,” referring to the red corrugated steel roofs covering the five buildings that comprise the estate. Architect Ron Mann designed the house, which consists of separate buildings with 18-foot high ceilings. The buildings, connected by glass atriums, span nearly 12,500 square feet around a half-acre courtyard with a swimming pool. The house overlooks the forests of Jacks Peak and Monterey Bay. The home has four bedrooms, four full bathrooms and two partial bathrooms. The master bedroom features a private terrace. Two guest suites, located off the main wing, have their own living areas and private entrances from the courtyard. The house is speckled with notable details: A photo montage in the kitchen hides the pantry; a bookcase in the lounge reveals a “mystery room”. A steel umbrella shades the cantina that is located beyond the swimming pool. The home was built by the owner, Robert Carroll, who never lived in it. Construction began in 2012 and wrapped up earlier this year. “It was a labor of love for about 4½ years,” said listing agent Michael Canning of Sotheby’s International Realty. View the full listing.
