Fashion designer Zac Posen has unloaded a modest two-bedroom apartment in Manhattan’s Sutton Place a few months after snagging a penthouse at an Emory Roth-designed cooperative 16 blocks north on the Upper East Side.

Mr. Posen, 36, whose devoted following includes the likes of Rihanna, Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon and Beyonce, sold the New York City apartment in June for $1.15 million, according to records filed with the city this week.

The designer and judge on Bravo reality series "Project Runway" never listed the Sutton Place pad publicly, so there’s not much information about the co-op unit.

When Mr. Posen bought the apartment in 2013 for $925,000, records show, it had two bedrooms, an office, a living room with a fireplace and two bathrooms. Before his ownership, a listing with Sotheby’s International Realty described the apartment as replete with built-ins, high ceilings, hardwood floors and sunny treetop views.

Without a listing offering a window into the designer’s home, it’s unclear whether Mr. Posen undertook any renovations during his four-year ownership, points out The New York Observer, which first reported the sale.

What is clear is that Mr. Posen’s new pad uptown has likely given him plenty of redecorating to do. He purchased the Upper East Side penthouse at the beginning of this year for $3.5 million, records show, from sellers with excessively florid taste—including painted rose trellis frescos, turquoise wallpaper and gold ceilings.

A publicist for Mr. Posen’s company did not immediately return a request for comment.
