A British radio mogul wants to create a mega-penthouse—one of the largest and most valuable residences in London—by combining the two top-floor units in the posh Knightsbridge Apartments.
A firm has submitted plans to the city on behalf of Ashley Tabor, 39, to bring together two 13th-floor penthouses in the London building, which is situated between the iconic department store Harrods and Hyde Park, according to public documents submitted to Westminster Council. If approved, this two-unit spread would have an estimated value of roughly £200 million (US$259 million).
Mr. Tabor, who founded Global Radio in 2007 and has since acquired many radio stations throughout the U.K., bought the larger of the two Knightsbridge flats in 2006 for £15.2 million (US$19.7 million), and last month closed on the unit next door for £90 million (US$116.6 million)—a record for the city so far this year, according to The Times, which first reported the news.
The combined flats would give Mr. Tabor’s family a total of 10 bedrooms, 1,418 square meters—or more than 15,000 square feet—and fluid access between the two apartments.
“The requirement to amalgamate these two units comes from a need for a large, modern family home where the family could live separately from guest accommodation and other more public areas of the house,” development firm Gerald Eve wrote on behalf of Mr. Tabor.
To get his dream home, Mr. Tabor has proposed busting through a home theater, a closet and a dividing wall between the two flats to create one continuous hallway, and rearranging the floor plan.
He plans to relocate the home cinema, for example, and expand the kitchen facilities into a side-by-side family kitchen and service kitchen, and replace a foyer off the elevator with a children’s playroom, according to planning documents.
Mr. Tabor would also have a hair salon, nail spa and massage room built into the east mezzanine, according to the proposed floor plan filed with Westminster.
Besides the in-house amenities, the radio mogul and his family have access to 24-hour concierge services, a swimming pool and spa facilities, and valet parking through the building, a 204-unit development designed by Squire & Partners and completed in 2005.
