"Spider-Man" star Tobey Maguire is looking to spin a profit off a mini compound in Santa Monica that he bought with wife, jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer, only a year and a half ago, according to Zillow.

The three-building property, which includes a main house built in 1927, a 1,200 square-foot studio and a separate gym, went on the market Friday for $2.995 million. Los Angeles County property records show the home sold in May 2015 for $2.68 million.

The previous owner, installation artist Michael McMillen, put significant work into the three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom house, with improvements totaling more than $500,000, property records show.

Mr. McMillen, who grew up in the house, hired architect Ruben Ojeda to add a second floor to the 1920s, Mission-style bungalow and raise the ceiling to 22 feet, said Compass listing agent Scott King.

"He wanted to keep the spirit of Spanish style, but he wanted to modernize and expand it," said Mr. King. "It’s pretty unconventional."

Interior renovations, which expanded the home to 2,400 square feet, have Spanish-style elements such as exposed wooden beams, large windows and barrel ceilings, Mr. King said.

Mr. McMillen also hired architecture firm Koning Eizenberg to build a 1,200-square-foot studio to use as a work space, with high ceilings and a wall of windows. It was one of the now-famous firm’s earliest works, Mr. King said.

The property’s third structure, a 1920s garage, is now being used as a gym.

Mr. King said he could not confirm whether Mr. Maguire, 41,is the current owner of the property.

But this wouldn’t be the first home that Mr. Maguire, who played the web-spinning Marvel superhero, flipped a home. Last year, he sold a house in Brentwood, California, for $10.25 million, $1.8 million more than what he paid a year prior.

The sale of the bungalow comes a couple weeks after Mr. Maguire announced he and Ms. Meyer plan to split after nine years of marriage.
