Listing of the Day
Location: Mayfair, London
Price: £10.95 million (US$15.33 million)
While it is difficult to tell exactly how old some mews properties in London are, according to Knight Frank agent Alastair Nicholson, it is likely that this charming period freehold townhouse, in the heart of Mayfair village, was built in the 1890s or early 1900s.
Known until 1937 as Adams Mews, when the name was changed to Adams Row, the original purpose of the mews was to serve as stable or coach house accommodation for the main properties in Mount Street.
But in 1940, an explosive bomb is recorded as falling somewhere between Mount Street and Adams Row, meaning many of the properties had to be rebuilt, hence the current mews not showing any evidence of previous equestrian usage, aside from stable-like garage doors.
The sleek and modern home has been artistically refurbished and exquisitely designed by the seller, whose “exacting standards and artistic eye” mean that “the finish is exceptional,” Mr. Nicholson said.
The owners are also family oriented, and have designed rooms to be open plan and multi-purpose, like the dine-in kitchen/family room with a retractable light well, or the cozy reception room that also functions as a double study area.
This 3,834-square-feet, three-story home has four bedrooms and four bathrooms, as well as four reception rooms.
The house includes a 10-seat cinema room with drop-down screen, complete with a wall of wine storage. At the basement level is a fully equipped gym, steam room with shower and a water closet. In addition to a utility room, a double garage and a balcony, the property benefits from a selection of unique features including a traditional stone pizza oven, a private terrace which opens electronically to create ground floor al fresco dining. There are fireplaces in every reception room and bedroom, as well as air conditioning throughout.
Quietly tucked in between Mount Street and Grosvenor Square, this charming townhouse is situated in one of Mayfair’s most sought-after addresses. Mayfair village, in the very heart of London, is famed for its boutique shops, with nearby Mount Street offering an array of high-end fashion spots, while Oxford Street is home to a variety of department stores, including the world-famous Selfridges.
Adams Row is a predominantly residential address with world renowned hotels The Connaught and The Dorchester at its doorstep. Nearby Berkeley Square is home to a selection of world-class restaurants and private members clubs, while Grosvenor Square, Mount Street Gardens and Hyde Park are close, too.
