Authentically restored Richard Neutra homes don’t come on the market often, and this one in Bel Air includes an addition by noted Neutra scholar John Bertram, who worked off the famous mid-century architect’s original plans.

The Hammerman House, named after the original owners and built in 1954, features typical Neutra touches, including floor-to-ceiling windows that allow the home to blend in with its natural surroundings on a landscaped hillside. The two-year renovation, completed in 2004, returned the home to its original features. It included updates to the kitchen and an added second-floor bedroom and bath.

"The architect wanted to be cautious in his approach to the restoration and keep as much Neutra-esque options as possible," said agent Aaron Kirman of Pacific Union International. "For people looking for original character, this house has that."

What makes this Neutra home unique are the dual master bedrooms, each with westward views to the Pacific Ocean, Mr. Kirman said.

"A lot of architectural houses of this period are smaller in scale and size," he added.

Stats

Five bedrooms, four full baths and one half-bath are spread over approximately 4,315 square feet on two floors. A bedroom and bath off the kitchen can be used as staff quarters.

Amenities

There’s a hidden wet bar, and the main open-floor space was designed for entertaining. The eastern wall of windows overlooks a large pool. There’s also a walk-in closet with an island, and a sunken tub in one of the main bathrooms.

The carport, with lit glass, is large enough for two vehicles, but the long drive, behind an entrance gate, winds up the half-acre site and can hold three or four more.
