A unique California house that was the longtime home—and labor of love— of late architect Robert Overstreet is on the market and asking $4.2 million.

The 4,000-square-foot house in Corte Madera, around 15 miles from San Francisco, was listed last month. It was completed in the 1970s, said listing broker Tamara Goldman of Pacific UnionInternational Real Estate, and took Overstreet "about 10 years to build," she said.

Sitting on 1.3 acres of forest-like land, the secluded, wood-filled property, which comprises a main and guest house, was reportedly Overstreet’s primary residence for 20 years. The house has Redwood paneling, handcrafted doors, a dining room with an Overstreet-designed height-adjustable dining table, double-height ceilings, huge wooden beams, multiple terraces, a garden and a Koi pond.

The home’s "conversation area" features a fireplace with a hood made from railroad ties that Overstreet found in an Oakland railroad yard and custom stained glass on the formal entry door depict the home’s floor plan, according to the listing.

The current owners purchased the house from Overstreet in 1997 for $752,000, property records show, and spent the last three years embarking on updates to the home "that honor Overstreet’s original vision while keeping in step with lifestyle trends," the listing reads. Updates include doors, windows, kitchen and bathrooms and entirely restored wood exteriors for both the four-bedroom main house and the one-bedroom guest house, the listing said.

Overstreet, who excelled in unusual areas of architecture, including steep slope structures, mausoleums, libraries and houseboats, died in 2009 at the age of 84.
