Living in a New York City building is like history reincarnated—former factories turned sleek lofts; churches morphed into condos. In this city, dwellings are constantly reimagined in their original bones so that styles commingled in the most creative way possible. Once a hat factory circa 1909, this Flatiron District building now boasts a modernist duplex penthouse. It was designed by renowned architect Lee Mindel of Shelton Mindel, who in fact, owns the home himself.

Founded by Lee Mindel and the late Peter L. Shelton in 1978, the firm has received 28 AIA awards for architecture. They’ve designed countless residences in the New York area as well as the Polo Ralph Lauren headquarters and the Anne Klein corporate headquarters.

A study in light and volume, the two-story loft features open spaces and soaring walls of glass. "The property has 365-degree views of Manhattan—from the Hudson and East rivers all the way down to the Freedom Tower, Madison Square clock tower, and up to the Empire State Building," says listing agent Scott Francis of The Corcoran Group.

The Stats

This 3,800-square-foot home has 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms.

The Design Pedigree

Using a cylindrical water tank on the roof as his inspiration, Mr. Mindel incorporated the shape throughout. He flanked the tank with an outdoor deck and then echoed the cylindrical silhouette below by creating a round entry hall, which connects to the common areas of the home.

"A sculptural custom metal staircase in the center gives the unit movement," Mr. Francis says. It joins the main level with the glass-enclosed solarium on the second floor. White columns, glass walls, and brushed nickel room dividers give the interiors a contemporary feel that’s warmed by cherry and oak wood flooring.

Amenities

In Manhattan, any tiny slice of outdoor space is appreciated. This apartment, on the other hand, comes with a sprawling landscaped roof deck, which spans the length of the building and houses a glass conservatory. There’s ample space for dining and entertaining against staggering city views. Additionally, the home has a private keyed elevator and a common swimming pool, fitness center, home theater, and a sports court.

Neighborhood Notes

Located in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, the building neighbors Chelsea and is an easy walk to the High Line elevated park. The lively area is also close to the West Village and SoHo.
