A sprawling modernist house designed in the early 2000s by noted architect Michael Palladino in the wine country of Santa Ynez Valley, California, is coming onto the market this week with a price tag of $8.995 million, Mansion Global has learned.
The six-bedroom, eight-bathroom house features a custom curvilinear ceiling that spans the living, dining and family rooms, shaped as a wave from 14 feet at its highest point and ending in clerestory windows.
“The horizontal organization of the plan around outdoor living "rooms” is consistent with the ranch typology that has evolved in the foothills of these coastal mountains,“ said Mr. Palladino, principal designer of Richard Meier & Partners who is best known for designing the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Burda and Arp Museums in Germany and the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art.
"The setting is stunning, with rolling hills, valley views, 200-year-old oak trees, and a rich variety of flowering plants,” he said.
Mr. Palladino blended indoor living with outdoor living. “The shaped roof serves to expand the living room volume and views to the west and the cantilevered brise soleil extends living space to the outside while protecting the glass façade from western exposure,” Mr. Palladino said.
The main residence also has a fully appointed eat-in-kitchen, private sitting room, an office/library, exercise room and solar-heated saltwater pool, according to Billy Rose, founder and president of The Agency, and a co-listing agent of the property.
In addition to the architecturally significant house, the 116-acre estate also has an eight-stall equestrian facility with a bathing and grooming area, tack room, laundry room, as well as a two-bedroom house for the staff.
“The picturesque property is a great retreat for someone who enjoys a relaxing, serene lifestyle in the wine country,” Mr. Rose said.
The property was owned by the late Harold Williams and his wife, Nancy Englander, who were top executives of J. Paul Getty Trust, the world’s largest art institution with an estimated endowment of $6.7 billion which runs the Getty Center, Getty Museum, Getty Foundation and other Getty programs.
Williams, who also served as a former SEC Chairman and University of California regent, died last July at 90.
Ms. Englander wasn’t immediately available for comment.
The property was once offered as a bundle with an adjacent 112 acres of land for $15 million in 2012, listing records show.
