Location: Schroon, New York Price: $5,350,000

This handcrafted French trapper-style log cabin on 172 acres in the Adirondacks is an ideal place to get cozy this winter. Skye Notch, as it’s known, was built in 2000 by Maple Island Homes and features hand-scribed log and hand-split cedar shake construction, which gives it an old-world storybook charm.

The property is 30 minutes from Lake George and Lake Placid and 60 minutes from Saratoga Springs. "Both within and without, the rugged beauty of the Adirondack Mountains, combined with the romance of European antiquity, creates a rare masterpiece of nature, craftsmanship, and fine arts," says listing agent Kim Bender of Select Sotheby’s International Realty.

In addition to the main home, the property includes a second 3,638-square-foot house with five bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms situated on an idyllic pond. Built by Paschal Warren in the late 1800s as a 50-person boarding house, the dwelling was remodeled in 2000. Both homes have mountain, meadow, and water views, says Ms. Bender. "This is a place to admire nature’s beauty and immerse in the solitude of the serene grounds," she says.

Design Pedigree

Beyond the fields of lupine flowers, the custom-crafted home spares no detail at every nook. A combination of natural materials and European antiques, interiors showcase eclectic alpine elegance. Warm rustic rooms are enhanced thanks to log-crafted walls, post-and-beam log structural elements, bluestone and wood flooring, antique oak paneling, and custom fireplaces. Antiques and furnishings, including doors and church seats from Leeds, England, stair railings with intricate ironwork, and stag antlers from Bulgaria were hand selected in Europe by the homeowners and shipped to the home. Westport, Connecticut, designer Beverly Ellsley worked on the main kitchen.

Within the massive balcony-clad living room is a three-story stone waterfall, stream, and fire feature designed by Quentin Caron of Coyle & Caron, who also works for Walt Disney Imagineering, to bring the outside in. The main house also boasts a home theater with a nine-foot screen and seating for 10, a wine tasting room with a stone water feature and storage for 1,000 bottles, a cigar room designed with a special air filtration system, and a casino room with furniture imported from Germany. Neighborhood Notes

The idyllic beauty of the Adirondacks first came to life in the mid 19th Century by the Hudson River School of painting, which captured the landscape on canvas.

Today, the area is known as the Hoffman Notch Wilderness. It was named for the notch, or valley, between Blue Ridge and Washburn Ridge and encompasses 38,000 acres with 15 miles of trails along Bailey and Marion ponds and Hoffman and Severance mountains. In fact, the cliffs and valleys of Hoffman Mountain became the inspiration for Thomas Cole’s 1838 painting, "Schroon Mountain."
