If you are a fan of the 1999 romantic comedy “Notting Hill,” you would remember the beautiful Zen Garden where Anna Scott (played by Julia Roberts) and William Thacker (Hugh Grant) host their wedding reception.
A hedge fund manager in London now gets to have this beautiful garden as his backyard after paying £13.5 million (US$17.4 million) for the home.
The 8,353-square-foot townhouse in Craven Hills Gardens was annexed to the iconic Hempel Hotel in London. The minimalist-style hotel was once popular among celebrities, including Michael Jackson, Victoria and David Beckham and Tom Cruise, who all stayed there, according to the listing agent Sotiris Poulengeris of Hyde Park Agencies.
The white stucco townhouse that sold last week sits on the edge of the famous Zen Garden featured in the “Notting Hill” movie.
The Hempel Hotel closed in 2012, and the townhouse was purchased by a privately regulated fund from the hotel’s owner in July 2015, according to Mr. Poulengeris.
“The previous owner … was a private, regulated fund investing in properties in London. The property was resold last week to a London hedge fund manager for £13.5 million ($17.4 Million),” Mr. Poulengeris said.
Now configured as a Victorian-style villa with hotel suites, the house is ready for a full restoration.
“The property has already got the planning permission, and it’s going to change dramatically inside after the repair,” Mr. Poulengeris said. According to him, the buyer plans to transform this property into a single-family residence with six bedrooms, a reception room, a gym, a 118-feet terrace, and direct access to the Zen Garden.
“It will be the only home on the square that has direct access to the garden,” said Mr. Poulengeris.
