Listing of the Day: A Lowcountry Home Amid Marshland

The Shingle-style house on nearly 12 acres overlooks the Kiawah River and the Atlantic Ocean

Save

Location:  Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Price:  $13 million A secluded wetland setting, dotted with live oaks and soaring royal palms, is just one of many perks on this nearly 12-acre estate on Kiawah Island—located 25 miles southwest of Charleston. The two-story house, built in 2005, enjoys uninterrupted views of the Kiawah River, the Stono Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean. “It’s the best of the lowcountry,” said listing agent Cynthia Noble of Kiawah Island Real Estate. The Basics The 15,332-square-foot home has seven bedrooms, nine full bathrooms and three partial baths. (One of the bedrooms and two of the full bathrooms are in the guesthouse.) “The house has arms that seem to wrap around you,” said Noble, referring to the home’s winding wings. “There are so many areas where you can go to relax that no one area seems cavernous. It’s very homey.” Design Pedigree The Shingle-style house was designed by Shope Reno Wharton, a Connecticut-based architectural firm, with interiors by Jackye Lanham of Jacquelynne P. Lanham Designs in Atlanta. The architects designed the house around the area’s matchless vistas: A “sunrise porch” offers views of the sun rising over the ocean, while a “sunset” porch watches it disappear over the river. Amenities The home boasts an additional 5,000 square feet of decking and porches. Take a dip in the infinity-edge swimming pool, lounge on the covered porch or whip up lunch in the outdoor kitchen. There’s also a wine cellar—complete with a humidor—off the library on the first floor. “You can pour a glass of cognac and then sit on the private deck and smoke a cigar,” said Noble. “It’s a man’s dream come true.” The estate also features a 477-foot-long deep-water dock, which stretches over the wetlands to the open water. Additional Perks The listing includes an option to purchase a membership to the Kiawah Island Club, which features two golf courses, a beach club, day spa, fitness center and boating facilities, as well as upscale restaurants and bars. Neighborhood Notes The estate is located in the Preserve—a neighborhood comprised of forests, wetlands and marsh savannahs. Residents can access walking trails, a viewing tower that overlooks Blue Heron Pond and a community boathouse. “It’s a great place to go crabbing or shrimping,” Noble said. Accolades The home was profiled in the June 2009 issue of Architectural Digest. Agent: Cynthia Noble, Kiawah Island Real Estate View the full listing.
