A Hamptons residence that was the longtime home to late fashion icon China Machado has come onto the market for $9.8 million.

Machado, a Chinese-born Portuguese-American model who paved the way for non-white models to appear on the covers of major American magazines with her trailblazing appearance on Harper’s Bazaar in 1959, bought the property in 1994 for an undisclosed amount.

She lived there until she died at 86 in December 2016, her daughter Emmanuelle LaSalle, who inherited the house, told Mansion Global.

The model, who worked with Avedon, Givenchy, Dior, Balenciaga and Oleg Cassini, and socialized with the likes of Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, William Holden, Diana Vreeland, and bullfighter Luis Miguel Dominguin, often hosted fashionable soirees and gatherings there, including her annual June "Party for the Roses" for approximately 100 of her closest friends to view her lush pink rose gardens, according to Ms. LaSalle.

"She was devoted to entertaining and cooking. It brought her a lot of joy," Ms. LaSalle said.

Meanwhile, Machado also enjoyed the endless water views from her window, she said.

"She would watch beautiful sunsets and boats sailing through, it gave her a sense of serenity, peace and tranquility," Ms. LaSalle said.

The interior of the house was inspired by Machado’s upbringing in Shanghai and her many trips to Asia, Europe and South America, said Ms. LaSalle.

The home on Sunset Beach Road in Sag Harbor, New York, has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, an open-plan living room and a state-of-the-art kitchen, according to the listing with Rima Mardoyan Smyth of Douglas Elliman, Mala Sander of The Corcoran Group, and Beate Moore of Sotheby’s International Realty, who posted the listing late March.

"This magical home takes one across a lawn framed by a pink rose wall to the beach, while it’s also conveniently located close to the Sag Harbor downtown," Ms. Smyth said.

The 0.94-acre property has a large garage and room for a pool (where there’s is currently a bocce court), according to the listing.
