Retired hockey star Wayne Gretzky has sold his Thousand Oaks, California, mansion for $6 million.

Mr. Gretzky, 55, earlier this month unloaded his five-bedroom home at the exclusive Sherwood Country Club in Ventura County to Trixy Weiss, co-founder of Genesis Capital, LLC, an investment management firm, according to a publicist for real estate agency Engel & Völkers.

The Ontario native—who played for the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings and is widely considered the greatest player in NHL history—has owned the home since 2009, when he and his wife, actress Janet Jones, bought the property for $2.765 million, according to property records.

The house has been on and off the market since 2014, when Mr. Gretzky first listed it for $10.5 million.

Mr. Gretzky and his wife had designed the home after boutique hotels from around the world that they’d stayed in over the years, according to a blurb from Engel & Völkers. The eclectic design reflected the hockey star’s "meticulous persona" and elegance, the agency said.

Top Engel & Völkers’ advisors Nicole Van Parys and Gary Nesen led the sale.

Interior design elements show a mash-up of European refinement and backwoods masculinity, such as elaborate moulding, wainscoting, crystal chandeliers and coffered ceilings paired with dramatic black paint and antler motifs, images show.

The 7,600-square-foot house has five bedrooms and six bathrooms. The grounds also include a guest house, gym, sauna and artwork by "world-renowned artists," according to the publicist.
