Behind its elegant stone cladding and beautifully black lacquered front door, this home on Upper Grosvenor Street is surprisingly grand in scale.
“It’s an unexpectedly large house with a strong traditional heritage mixed with contemporary design and suitable for modern day family life,” said Grazyna Solland, director of Sollands, Ltd. “Many people have commented that the house is a tardis,” a reference to the time machine from long-running British TV series “Dr. Who.”
While it’s unlikely to transport visitors to alien worlds, the careful restoration does evoke the time when many elite Londoners, including members of the royal family, called this part of London home.
Having most recently been used as commercial offices, the six-level residence was left in a dilapidated state. Ms. Solland took on the challenge of reinstating its historic layout, which included creating large reception rooms and extending the basement level to create a 40-foot long kitchen/family room. She also restored the numerous bedroom suites and created lovely outside spaces.
“As it retained features alluding to its former, more opulent, self, I could see the potential that the house offered,” Ms. Solland said. “The large number and scale of windows on both the front and rear elevations of the house are also very impressive, especially the 8.5-foot tall sash window that allows light to flood the main staircase.”
Sollands, which is well known for its work in prime residential London, transformed every detail of the property, handling its architectural extension and remodeling, and refurbishing all the period details and curating the interior design.
“The house has undergone the most exceptional refurbishment and the quality of the work really shines through,” said listing agent Alastair Nicholson, partner in Knight Frank’s Mayfair office. “Compared to other houses of this size, the house benefits from exceptional outside space.”
The house has 7,170 internal square feet spread out over six floors, and includes three reception rooms, seven bedrooms and seven full bathrooms.
During the restoration, many modern conveniences were added, including a four-person elevator, central air conditioning, Lutron lighting, a building management system and a Crestron audio/visual system. There is also a media/cinema room, a gym, a wet room, a roof terrace and a patio garden.
The Central London neighborhood is quite cosmopolitan, according to Mr. Nicholson. “The house is superbly located for easy access to the open green spaces of Hyde Park and the internationally acclaimed dining in Mayfair,” Mr. Nicholson said. “Plus, it has some of the most famous shopping districts in the world, such as Mount Street and Bond Street.”
