A seaside summer home where Greta Garbo took refuge in Sweden has hit the market.
The obsessively private Hollywood star would steal away to the scenic home, which her brother formerly owned on the Swedish island of Ingarö, said a spokeswoman for the listing brokerage Wrede. The home, which went on the market Tuesday, is listed as price upon application; the brokerage is asking no less than 32 million Swedish kroner (US$3.912 million).

The yellow, traditional-style home sits on the northwest corner of the island and offers the seclusion of more than 2.6 acres on the waterfront.
The main house spans 283 square meters (3,046 square feet), with up to seven bedrooms. Architectural features include French balconies from a second-floor bedroom and a family room and a large south-facing terrace that overlooks the water.
The Swedish-born actress left her mark on the property built in 1929, at the height of her career. She designed the basement, which she used as a gameroom, having a relief from a church installed on the walls, according to the brokerage. Thesculptedfigures depict the history of King Gustav Vasa, who ruled Sweden from 1523 until his death in 1560.

It wasn’t the only home where Garbo built bits of her Swedish heritage into the walls. She installed hand carvings into the wood paneling of her longtime co-op in Manhattan. Her heirs sold the apartment for $8.5 million last month—$2.5 million more than the asking price.
These days, the basement of her Swedish refuge is used as a guest room with a fireplace, according to the agents.

"It’s an amazing opportunity to convey such a historic property. The villa is truly an archipelago dream with the sea view, the private pier and the lush garden," said Titti Johansson, the listing agent for Werde.
The property has four additional buildings, including a garage and a large brewing facility. Two other cabins can be used as guest rooms or storage.
