A penthouse apartment at 10 Gracie Square—a co-op that author Tom Wolfe described as one of 42 "good buildings" in New York City in a famed 1988 Esquire magazine article—hit the market on Friday for $11.5 million.

The price is much lower than the $18.9 million the four-bedroom co-op’s owner was asking when it was last on the market in 2015 and a more than 50% discount from the $23 million the home was listed for in 2013, listing records show.

The 12-room residence has a private elevator, floor-to-ceiling windows, views of the East River, a library, wood-burning fireplaces and a wrap-around terrace, according to the listing with Corcoran’s Maria Pashby and Joanna Pashby, who did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Monthly maintenance for the home runs to the tune of $17,512.

The home is owned by financier Yves de Balmann, property records show. Though Mansion Global could not determine when Mr. de Balmann purchased the property, or how much he paid for the home, records show he has been the owner since at least 1998. Mr. de Balmann could not be reached for comment.

The building—on a cul de sac, bordering the East River and Carl Schurz Park—has been home to Gloria Vanderbilt; Anderson Cooper; Madame Chiang Kai-Shek, the Former First Lady of theRepublic of China; and real estate developer Stephen Ross, according to reports. But it won’t be home to the Obamas, though their supposed interested in the building was widely reported in in October.
