Actress Meredith Baxter, best known for her portrayal of hippie mom Elyse Keaton in hit 1980s TV show "Family Ties," is close to selling her redwood-clad mansion in Santa Monica Canyon.

The actress confirmed that her 4,500-square-foot architectural house, which looks like a contemporary cross between a tree house and a wood cabin, recently went into escrow.

The two-story home, built in the 1970s, is located on Alisal Lane, a private street in a celebrity-dense neighborhood and gets an extra privacy boost from a smattering of trees on the front lawn.

Ms. Baxter said she’s excited to be handing over a beloved home to a young family, she told Mansion Global.

"My house on Alisal Lane is where I raised my five children, lived for 42 years and fell in love with my wife," the actress said. "I am so excited that a lovely family with two little children will be living in a place that witnessed much joy."

The home was first listed in August for $6 million. The most recent asking price was $5.495 million.

The interior has the same woodsy, contemporary vibe as the outside. Vertical wood paneling covers the walls on all sides of a double-height living room with 20-foot ceilings. The cozy room has a fireplace and asymmetrical stained-glass windows, through which Ms. Baxter can see three of five eucalyptus trees, she said.

There’s also a fireplace in the wide, eat-in kitchen and one in the master suite, according to the listing.

A spiral staircase leads upstairs (through more wood paneling) to bedrooms on the second floor. The main house has four bedrooms in total, plus a separate guest house with its own kitchenette and bath—which Ms. Baxter dubbed "the treehouse."

If the new owners don’t already feel like wood nymphs in their new home, they can head outside, where a wood fence encircles the landscaped, tree-filled backyard. There’s also a pool and patio space with a grill and garden.

Ms. Baxter, 69, who’s appeared in more than 50 TV shows and movies, including playing herself on "Family Guy," said the home reminds her of a Unitarian Church. "Peace, peace, peace," she said.

Isabelle Mizrahi of Berkshire Hathaway is the listing agent on the property.
