Château Roquehort and Its 27 Acre Estate, Headed to Auction Block

The French property, which has inspired a wine vintage, has views of the Pyrenees

Not every estate has its own wine. But Château Roquehort has inspired a vintage that takes its name from the home, built in 1811.

Surrounded by vineyards in the southwest corner of France, the nine-bedroom, 11-bathroom château is being offered by Concierge Auctions in a June 22 auction with no reserve bid. It is currently listed at €2.9 million (US$3.3 million), and interested buyers must register via telephone or through the company’s app by June 20.

Built during Napoleon’s First Empire, the home sits on 27 acres amid vineyards in the Jurançon wine region. Château Roquehort is an award-winning sweet white wine, and features a drawing of this château on the bottle.

That means residents can offer up a bottle of the "house white" to guests seated on the patio overlooking the very vineyards where the grapes were grown.

The château has more than 9,000 square feet of living space and is being sold fully furnished. The current owners used it as a vacation home, and now that their children are older, have not been using the estate as much as they once did.

"Unlike the majority of châteaus for sale, this requires no work," said William McIntosh, project sales manager at Concierge Auctions. It has been completely renovated, from the natural slate roof to the plumbing and electrical work to the geothermic heating and cooling system, he said.

"It’s also light and airy," he added. "Sometimes châteaus are dark, but this one is bright. And it has large rooms; it hasn’t been all chopped up."

There are four main reception rooms with marble fireplaces and floors, including a great room, formal dining room and library. An open kitchen has recently been appointed with new appliances.

Upstairs, there are nine en-suite bedrooms, each with its own fireplace and oak floors.

Outside, there’s a heated pool and hot tub, plus a poolside lodge with a gym, sauna and home cinema. There’s also a one-bedroom caretaker’s cottage and two large barns on the property.

The home overlooks a private lake, and about six acres of maintained grounds. Woodlands and meadows make up the rest of the estate, which has views of the Pyrenees Mountains.

The estate is just about an hour’s drive from skiing at that range, as well as about an hour from the seaside town of Biarritz, Mr. McIntosh said. It’s also about 30 minutes from Pau, which has an airport offering flights around Europe.

"It’s a peaceful, tranquil setting, yet still has easy access," he said.
