Location: Charleston, South Carolina

Price: $4.1 million

This charming Colonial Revival home was built in 1909 by Albert Todd, a much sought-after neoclassical architect in South Carolina. Todd was known, in particular, for designing the stately home of Tristam T. Hyde, mayor of Charleston from 1915 until 1919. The neoclassical elements of this bright and welcoming residence, however—including the Ionic and Corinthian columns gracing its façade—are modest and elegant, rather than imposing.

It is warmed by blue window shutters, a Ludowici terracotta tile roof, and an exterior of spatterdash stucco.

A recent year-and-a-half-long renovation undertaken by the home’s current owners—who purchased the property in 2006—retains its historic materials, including original hardwood floors, tiles, woodwork and architectural detailing, while opening up the floor plan to create a more open and functional flow within.

The home’s agent, Caroline Ragsdale, describes it as being "beautifully maintained," with space utilized well throughout. The spaciousness created by the 11-foot and 10-foot high ceilings is enhanced by the natural light that floods each room, due to the home’s southern exposure as well as the transoms above most of the house’s interior doors.

Neighborhood notes

The home, which sits on the highest lot at the famed "bend in Church Street," is located "in one of the most historic areas of South Broad," according to Ms. Ragsdale. She adds that "from the front porch and the living room you can look straight down Church to the Whitepoint Gardens and the Ashley River."

Lying practically in the center of Charleston, the city’s historic district is less than a 10-minute drive to the bustling Upper King Street area.
