The 28th-floor apartment in Manhattan’s iconic Essex House that was home to late millionaire heiress Rachel Lambert Mellon sold for close to its asking price of $8.9 million, according to a source familiar with the deal.
Mellon's estate put the apartment on the market in December. The listing was handled by George Fesser and Stanley Hancock of Spire Group, both of whom declined to comment on the sale.
The listing went into contract within 24 days of the apartment’s first showing on Jan. 10, the source told Mansion Global. The sale closed on April 4 and the final price was $8.3 million, the same source said.
Mellon, known as "Bunny" to both her close friends as well as foreign heads of state, who died at 103 in 2014, purchased two adjacent units in Essex House, on Central Park South, for $5.9 million in 2000, property records show.
She then combined them into a spread for her business appointments and social gatherings when she was in the city, Mansion Global previously reported.
The 2,100-square-foot apartment has three bedrooms and three bathrooms, featuring herringbone timber floors, coffered ceilings, French doors and Central Park views.

Mellon, an heiress to the Listerine mouthwash fortune, was married to art collector and philanthropist Paul Mellon until his death in 1999. The estate plans to donate the proceeds of the sale to the Gerard B. Lambert Foundation, in memory of Mellon’s father.
No information on the buyer’s identity is publicly available as the sale has yet to appear in city records.
