A historic antebellum mansion and the location of Barbra Streisand’s drama “The Prince of Tides” has hit the market in Beaufort, South Carolina, for just shy of $2.7 million.
The Lewis Reeve Sams house, named after the plantation owner who built the home, is located in the city’s downtown historic district, The Point, and has sat near the edge of the Harbor River since 1852.
Sams, who owned a large swath of nearby Dataw Island, where the plantation was and where he grew cotton, indigo and oranges through the use of hundreds of slaves, built the home just a few years before his death, according to South Carolina Historic Property Records.
The seller, entrepreneur Scott Myers and his wife, Gwen, bought the home in 2006 for $1.875 million, according to county property records.
Though it’s undergone rehabilitation and restoration over the years, according to the historic property records, the home has retained its plantation-style architecture, replete with characteristic Greek-Revival inspiration. The home has a two-tiered porch lined with ionic columns and prominent window shutters.
The property brought an iconic Deep South aesthetic to romantic drama “The Prince of Tides” —nominated for seven Academy Awards in 1991 and starring Ms. Streisand and Nick Nolte—part of which was filmed at the property, the listing says.
The grounds include a courtyard filled with a maze of landscaped hedges, a central fountain and an outbuilding, according to photos of the new listing. Eight fireplaces and elaborate millwork decorate the interior of the home, and built-in bookshelves and cabinetry line a cozy library as well as the rustically finished ground floor, according to the listing with Edward Dukes of Lowcountry Real Estate.
Today, Bay Street separates the property from the water, but it can be easily accessed since the riverbank across the street is a city park, said Mr. Dukes.
The six-bedroom, seven-bathroom home has all the modern fittings, including an elevator and two laundry units, he added. There also two kitchens, a primary kitchen on the first level and a secondary catering kitchen on the finished ground floor.
The ground floor, which also has two bedrooms, could be converted to a separate apartment, the agent said.
