Location: New York, NY

Price: $12.99 million

The single-family home was first built in 1870, but as it exists today it’s as good as new. The original wood support beams were replaced with steel, which mitigates any slumping staircases or uneven floors commonly found in older homes with wood support. Only the home’s library contains a remnant of the past: partially exposed wood beams, connected to the newer steel structure.

From the finished basement to the roof deck, the five-story home is flush with modern conveniences. The lighting design, for instance, can accommodate an art collection as well as provide a sense of comforting daylight, according to the listing agent, David Kornmeier of Brown Harris Stevens.

On the garden level, French doors open from the kitchen to the backyard, which features red brick paving in a classic herringbone pattern and birch and maple trees.

The finished roof deck is accented with plants and offers views of the surrounding city. One can see several stately buildings, including the Pierre Hotel penthouse, the Barbizon and the Bloomberg tower as well as the Central Park South skyline.

Luxurious touches are on every floor, too: high ceilings and a gold onyx powder room on the parlour floor, and a full-floor master suite with a free-standing tub and a steam shower, to name a few. The kitchen is outfitted with two refrigerators, two dishwashers, double ovens, multiple sinks and a fireplace.

Stats

The house is spread out across 6,840 square feet over 11 rooms, including five bedrooms and five bathrooms, and a 2,000 square feet of outdoor space in the garden, the roof deck, and the terrace off the master bedroom, all of which face south and receive natural light.

Amenities

There are six working fireplaces: two limestone wood-burning fireplaces on the garden level, a Nero marble fireplace and a Giallo Reale marble fireplace on the parlor floor, a limestone fireplace in the master suite and a marble mosaic fireplace on the fourth floor.

The home is outfitted with a Savant smart-home system, which controls the Lutron lighting, automated shades, home security, and heating system—an 11-zone Mitsubishi HVAC system, plus a redundant 10-zone radiant heating system, which are surely appreciated during NYC’s snowy winters. If the power fails, the home has its own backup generator. The property also features an elevator and a central vacuum system.
