Location: Highgate, London

Price: £10 million (US$13.2 million)

Those looking for a true mix of historic and contemporary should look no further than this beautifully and painstakingly restored Victorian home in Highgate, London. The residence, with its Victorian brick façade and period features surrounding a meticulously designed contemporary exterior offers the best of both worlds.

Contemporary touches include an elevator, and an integrated system of Creston touch screen panels, which control the temperature, security system and music, and underfloor heating has been installed throughout.

Meanwhile, the Victorian exterior packs a serious history: it once belonged to Archibald Vivian Hill, who won the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physiology (or medicine).

An entire floor of the home is dedicated to the master suite (there are six bedrooms in total).

There is a ground floor leisure suite downstairs, and a grand entrance hall on the main floor, which leads through formal reception areas and landscaped gardens.

A blue plaque commemorates his ownership of the home. "It’s unusual for us to have a house to sell with a blue plaque. In over 30 years of this industry I’ve only dealt with a handful so I’m quite excited," said Robert Kramer of Glentree International, the agent for the home. "It’s a house with some real history."

The stats

The home features 10,000 square feet of living space over six stories. There are six bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms.

Amenities

The ground floor recreational area wouldn’t be out of place at the most luxurious sports club, with an indoor swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, gym, bar and home cinema. "It’s a wonderful surprise when you get downstairs to see this area open up," Mr. Kramer said.

Neighborhood notes

Highgate is a very desirable area of North London, with excellent schools and close proximity to the shopping and restaurants of Hampstead and Highgate Village. "You are literally by Highgate School, so it is convenient for parents of those who attend it," Mr. Kramer said. "You are across the road from Hampstead Heath and Kenwood House, between the villages of Hampstead and Highgate and close to the tube station into central London and motorways to major airports, so you have a little bit of everything."
