Location: Bora Bora, Tahiti

Private-island living has its perks: no noisy neighbors (other than the calls of indigenous wildlife), space to spread out, and a personal beach right in your backyard—so prime chair space is always guaranteed.

This tropical retreat is the kind of oasis imagined in a very good dream.  It’s been owned by beauty guru François Nars since 2000 and was also home to French polar explorer Paul-Emile Victor, who bought it in 1965 and, along with his wife, was the first inhabitant.

Known as Motu Tane (which in Tahitian translates to "Man's Island"), the property encompasses roughly 10 acres of sandy beach, tropical foliage, and coconut groves—all set against mountains etched in the background. "This island possesses, without question, one of the most spectacular beaches on Bora Bora," says listing agent Jacques Menahem of French Polynesia Sotheby’s International Realty.

Constructed 10 years ago, and on the market for the last two years, Motu Tane consists of traditional thatched-roof Polynesian huts or "fares" comprising a main property and nine independent beach bungalows that sleep up to 20 guests.

Showcasing a native island feel that harmonizes with the surroundings, interiors feature a mix of luxurious exotic woods, lava stone, coconut palms, and marble.

The Stats

The property houses 22 separate structures including two master suites, two family suites, nine bungalows, one pavilion with a living and dining room, a library building, a studio, a chef’s kitchen, and two staff quarters. There are 13 bedrooms throughout.

The Design Pedigree

Designed by Christian Liaigre, rooms are filled with custom-crafted furniture made from rare tropical wood and natural fabrics. Most bungalows have motorized screens, too, which bring the outside in—and can be instantly closed In case of excessive winds or tropical rains.

Amenities

Residing on a remote island can be tricky in terms of logistics and basic operations. But not here. "Motu Tane is completely self-sufficient," says Mr. Menahem. It has its own water-making facility, power generator, and wastewater treatment center. "Neither a power failure on the main island, nor a drastic water shortage can affect the level of comfort on Motu," he says.

Aside from the private beach all around, there’s a newly completed gym housed in its own building with state-of-the-art exercise equipment, an artist studio, as well as a home theater to catch up on the latest flicks when you’ve had your fill of staring at the faraway horizon. The property also comes with a small fishing boat for shallow lagoon waters.

Neighborhood Notes

Located just 10 minutes (via boat) from the Island of Bora Bora, the closest neighbors are back on the mainland.
