Blair Chang isn’t too enthralled when reflecting on the architectural and design trends directing upscale Los Angeles homes at the moment.
"In Los Angeles right now, you see a lot of cold, white boxes," said Mr. Chang, property agent and co-founder of The Agency. As a counterpoint to this impersonal aesthetic, though, Mr. Chang cites this unique Hollywood Hills "mini mansion" designed in an opulent modernist style by Stern + Kind.
"On one hand [it’s] very modern and on the other, very warming," he said, of the vibrant abode, which combines elements of Italian modernism and Japanese architecture with smart home technology.
"The design is absolutely amazing and unusual," co-agent Victoria Gureyeva of Amulet Realty said, noting the large perforated brass façade at the home’s entrance as one of its more unique features. Retaining an Old Hollywood charm, she continued, the home is still decidedly modern with a floating staircase, large windows, Japanese Shou-Sugi Ban sidings, dark marble countertops and brass features found throughout the property.

Smart home technology, meanwhile, gives the homeowner control of the residence’s lighting and appliances entirely from their smart phone.
The attention to detail witnessed inside the home continues to the well-maintained exterior garden, which is a unique blend of colorful foliage, verdant tufts of fescue grass, and modern design.
"What I like about [the property] is the Zen aspects, from the landscaping to the materials used," Mr. Chang said of the residence, before later adding, "In many ways it’s a modern sanctuary."
