Location: Edwards, Colorado

Price: $33 million

You won’t know where the house ends and nature begins in this Vail Valley home, called Walden House.

The name comes from the fact that there’s a private pond on the property, and its secluded nature is reminiscent of Henry David Thoreau’s Walden Pond. All water activities (boating, fishing, skating) are exclusively for use by the Walden House owner, though the pond does also provide water for the Cattleman’s Club homeowner association.

Designed by renowned architect Annabelle Selldorf, whose designs include New York City’s Neue Gallery, the house is built around an enclosed, landscaped courtyard and features enormous windows in every room, the better to take in the stunning mountain vista. It is about 15 miles from Vail, a popular and posh ski resort.

The Stats

The house is 11,869 square feet, and includes seven bedrooms, eight full baths and one partial bath. It sits on a 105.63-acre property.

There is an also a two-bed, two-bath guest/caretaker unit (at 1,354 square feet) on the property.

In addition, there are two contiguous 35-acre lots being sold separately. 420 Saddle Horn Way and 765 Saddle Horn Way are asking $3.5 million each.

Design Pedigree

The house is an example of the Contemporary style in which Ms. Selldorf often works. The house also includes some furniture designed by Ms. Selldorf.

Ms. Selldorf is an Architectural Digest Top 100 award winner, and she runs Selldorf Architects in New York City, which is responsible for the design of the Van De Weghe townhouse in New York City; The Mesa at Amangiri, a collection of villas in Canyon Point, Utah; and another Colorado manse, the Pika House.

Amenities

The house sits adjacent to its own private pond. There’s also an outdoor pool, hot tub and a gym in its own building, which includes a three-quarter bath. A barn offers plenty of storage for outdoor equipment—the current owners use it to house their ski mobiles.

Neighborhood Notes

Just a few minutes’ drive from downtown Edwards, Lake Creek is a verdant and peaceful setting. Neighbors are plants and wildlife, views are of the Sawatch and Gore Mountain ranges. Every day offers the opportunity to hike, picnic, explore groves, forests and creeks, or head into town to visit art galleries like the Hughes Collections and restaurants like the highly rated Juniper. On the other side of the river is the Crazy Mountain Brewing Company.
