Listing of the Day
Location: London, United Kingdom
Price: £1.9 million (US$2.5 million)
This somewhat ordinary looking three-bedroom apartment has a lot of great external factors in its favor. It sits within a beautiful old converted church and it’s just across the street from the iconic Abbey Road Studios. Plus it’s in a stylish, centrally located London neighborhood.
“It’s very rare to have a church conversion kept to its original features with a still active church within it,” said listing agent Thomas Middleditch.
“Its other key feature is its location on Abbey Road,” he said. “The studio is just 20, 30 steps from the property itself.”
“They kept the façade of the church, yet this property has a completely modern finish,” he added.
It is in the tony St. John’s Wood neighborhood, where Sir Paul McCartney still has a home. The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” album cover famously features the band crossing the road.
“It’s a very quintessentially British area,” Mr. Middeditch said.
Abbey Road Baptist Church was built in 1863, and the conversion to apartments dates to 2012-13, he said. As part of the conversion, the church was also extensively restored, rebuilt and refurbished to bring it back to its former glory.
The historic church is English Heritage Grade II listed, meaning that permission would be needed to make any changes to the property.
This apartment, which has an open-floor plan and high ceilings, is on the fourth and fifth floors of the five-story building. A mezzanine divides the kitchen/dining space and the living room.
“It’s very quirky in design,” because of the way the builders had to work around and preserve the existing structure of the church, Mr. Middleditch said.
“It’s a very light property, with windows everywhere,” he said. The bedrooms are “very light and open, with wooden flooring.”
The furnishings are included, “but that’s completely negotiable, if the buyer wants them removed,” he said.
The 1,421-square-foot apartment has three bedrooms and three full bathrooms.
Aside from the Beatles, a who’s who of British and American musical stars have recorded at Abbey Road Studios, including Pink Floyd, Judy Garland, Adele, Vera Lynn, Kanye West, Paul Robeson, Burt Bacharach, the Spice Girls, Amy Winehouse, Tony Bennett, Mary J. Blige, Michael Jackson, Elton John, the Hollies, Patti LaBelle, Lady Gaga, Glenn Miller, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Wonder and James Taylor.
“You’ve got several renowned London landmarks within walking distance of the property,” Mr. Middleditch said.
Lords Cricket Ground is within a five- to 10-minute walk, he said. Regents Park and Primrose Hill are also nearby, as is trendy High Street with its many shops and restaurants.
“The streets off Abbey Road are very affluent,” Mr. Middleditch said. “The whole area is very well presented.”
