Listing of the Day

Location: Otterburn, England

Price: £1.4 million (US$1.9 million)

This week we’re looking back on the Listings of the Day that garnered the most attention from our readers in 2017: An amenity-filled waterfront mansion in Florida, a British castle set on 32 acres, a Dubai villa with a nightclub, a 1940s home perched above Los Angeles and a grand Victorian estate on the shores of Rhode Island. Some have sold and some are still available.

Up today: A historic British castle.

"It’s one of our star performing properties," said agent Samuel Gibson of Strutt & Parker upon hearing the castle had appeared as the fourth in Mansion Global’s top five Listings of the Day for 2017.

Although Otterburn is still on the market, international interest rose after the story first ran in September, Mr. Gibson said.

Once a private country estate, the Grade II-Listed castle was extensively renovated in the 1840s to its current Victorian aesthetic and today is run as a sprawling hotel.

In turn, the property provides a unique mix of luxurious hotel living and quintessential British estate life, two aspects that have split interested home buyers, Mr. Gibson said. In effect, some potential buyers have contemplated maintaining the current business, while others have considered turning it into their own private abode.

Mr. Gibson has showed the vast, historic property about once a week to potential buyers from around the world, he said.

"It’s a place we here adore and our client loves it too," he said. "It’s just a question of passing the baton onto the next love affair."

Stats

The 18,671-square-foot main house has 17 bedrooms and 17 bathrooms and stands on approximately 32 acres of land.

Amenities

Part of the property’s appeal to about half of his interested buyers, Mr. Gibson noted, is the castle’s current status as a hotel.

To service guests, the amenity-rich property features a bistro, commercial kitchen and a bar. Furthermore, the 32-acre estate includes a stream and a lake.

Neighborhood notes

Located in Northern England, Otterburn is a quintessential British village centered around the castle. "There’s a good-old traditional pub," Mr. Gibson noted with a laugh, before describing the area as a whole as "a very rural place."

Only about 30 minutes by car to Newcastle Airport, the castle is near daily international flights and a potential private jet parking.
