Location: Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
Price: $6.5 million
Set on the island’s north shore, this ultra-contemporary beach house is a study in bold angles and clean, white design. Glass walls open to the elements, fusing the home’s living areas with their tropical surroundings.
“As you walk into the house, you’re just consumed by this view of the ocean,” said owner Lisa Brewer, who built the home in 2015 with her husband, Vidal. The Londoners—who’ve lived on Grand Cayman for about five years—have developed a number of residential properties in the U.K.
The 7,345-square-foot home, finished in 2015, has four bedrooms with views of the Caribbean Sea, four full bathrooms and two partial baths.
The couple bought the .63-acre lot in 2011, when contemporary design was less prevalent on Grand Cayman.
“We were very much inspired by Spanish modernist architecture,” Brewer said. Looking to distinguish their home from other island escapes, the couple enlisted U.K.-based architect Nicholas Tye, who emphasized the home’s relationship with its surrounding environment.
“If we’d used someone from the island we would’ve ended up with more of the same.”
The home spans three levels including the rooftop. “That’s our party deck,” said Brewer. The 70-foot-long terrace encompasses a shaded kitchen with a bar, a garden and a putting green with artificial turf. There’s also an L-shaped swimming pool on the first-floor patio just steps away from the sand. Finally, the property includes 100 feet of private beachfront.
What’s in a Name?
The Brewers named the property Camden House after North London’s Camden Town, a neighborhood known for its eclectic mix of open-air markets, global cuisine and nightlife.
“It’s a really cool, edgy place in London,” Brewer said.
The Brewers sought to bring a touch of that flair to this property.
The couple chose laid-back Rum Point for its sandy beaches and resort-like atmosphere.
“People just walk along the beach with a rum cocktail,” Brewer said. “It’s how you would imagine the tropical Caribbean.”
The area has become increasingly popular with American jetsetters.
The house won the Governor’s Award 2015 for Design and Construction Excellence in the Cayman Islands.
